Let’s be real, the holiday season can stress even the healthiest of relationships. It’s a time of joy, grief, tradition, and unmet expectations 😉 A tool like the Enneagram helps us depersonalize and look past our own way of moving in the world, to see how we can love and support our partners in their Types. It also gives us language to communicate what we want and need. Empathy and communication (and lots of deep breathing) can turn fights into opportunities to understand each other better.

Yep, you can have red flags with friends! It’s perfectly normal to not notice these things, to see them flare after a while, or to realize, “Oh gosh, I think I’m doing the not-so-great behavior!”

It’s difficult to talk about conversation styles by Enneagram Type without the very important caveat that these are general ideas. Your family of origin, family system today, work, friends, and schooling will all impact how and why you communicate the way you do!

A lovely friend asked about this today and I always find it super helpful. I’m a Type 5, which means I’m doing repressed. I think about what I want to do, how I want to do it, I listen to podcasts about it, I imagine how it will feel. I will clean my whole house, I will get every errand done…but I won’t do the important thing I really want to do! It’s scary and takes conscious effort to notice this tendency. Doing is not natural for me.

Grief work can arrive in our lives in so many ways. It can look like grieving past hurts and lost relationships. It can be grappling with a recent loss. It can also be engaging with what loss has done to your future plans.
